What is the WhatsApp Business API?
The WhatsApp Business Platform — commonly called the WhatsApp Business API or Cloud API — is the official way for companies to send and receive WhatsApp messages at scale. It powers automation, multiple agents, broadcasts and integration with your business systems. Unlike the free WhatsApp Business app, it has no built-in interface: it’s infrastructure you build on top of.
Business app vs. Business API
The WhatsApp Business app is built for a single small business on one phone — great for getting started, but limited to one device and manual messaging. The Business API is built for scale: a whole team on one official number, automation, chatbots, broadcasts, notifications and deep system integration.
- App: one phone, one person, manual.
- API: many agents, automation, integration, scale.
What is the Cloud API?
The Cloud API is Meta’s hosted version of the WhatsApp Business API — you don’t need to run your own servers. It’s the most common way new businesses get on the platform today, and it’s what we set up for most clients. (An On-Premises API also exists for specific requirements.)
How WhatsApp pricing works
Meta charges per 24-hour conversation, grouped into categories — marketing, utility, authentication and service. Pricing varies by country and category. These pass-through fees are separate from any provider or implementation fees. We help you forecast conversation costs for your volumes.
Message templates & the 24-hour window
When a customer messages you, a 24-hour customer service window opens in which you can reply freely. Outside that window — and for any business-initiated message — you must use a pre-approved message template. Templates are submitted to Meta for approval and assigned a category. Getting templates and categories right is essential for deliverability and quality.
Opt-in, compliance & avoiding bans
Most bans are avoidable. They come from messaging people who didn’t opt in, using unofficial bulk tools, poor-quality templates, or high block/report rates. The safeguards: collect genuine opt-in, stay on the official API, use approved templates, warm up sending gradually, and monitor your number’s quality rating. We manage all of this for you.
